Fake Dad Opens Up The Dirty Window And Feels The Rain On Their Skin In New Single “How Do I Cry?"

“How Do I Cry?” is an alt-pop summer banger that reconnects you with the feelings you’ve been too afraid to feel.

BROOKLYN, NY - (May 5, 2022) - Andrea de Varona and Josh Ford, the eclectic indie alt-pop couple known as Fake Dad, follow their recent drum and bass release “John Cusack” with a return to 2010s indie rock sensibilities on their newest single, “How Do I Cry?” coming June 2nd. The struggle at the core of the song is simple and relatable to anyone who has found themselves numbed by the shell shock of the 20s: I’m so burnt out by my feelings that I can’t even feel them anymore.

Crying is so easy, even babies know how to do it. And babies are like, super dumb. But somehow, over the years, we are taught to squish it down. Soon, we’re so full of repressed shame that we walk around like a sponge, oversaturated in our own stale emotions - eventually, we can’t cry even if we wanted to.

With her mother going into a potentially life-threatening surgery thousands of miles away during the height of Covid, songwriter-producer Andrea de Varona explores the strange sensation of being so full of unacknowledged emotions that you’re ready to explode – a burst of cathartic, cleansing tears would be welcome, if only you could unclench your survival mechanisms long enough to allow it through.

The signifier of a new era for the duo, this song is a slow-burning alt-pop summer banger stacked with lush vocals and brimming with an electric melancholy. Fake Dad's undeniably fresh sound comes through with cascading drum-beats layered with groovy bass lines and sparkling arpeggiated synths; this track is cathartic, contagiously energetic, and is an epic display of the intersection between sorrow and charisma.
