How To Build a Strong Social Media Presence as an Artist

Social media is an intricate part of being an artist and gaining attention in today’s world. Having a prominent social media presence is how you gain/maintain a following and promote yourself to the world, and you can do it with a click of a button. Social media is an instant way to connect with people, and you can use it to your advantage with these tips straight from Evergreen’s social media marketing team.

  1. Select a recognizable username

If you have a common name, use something that can set you apart, either a nickname or adding “music” to the end of your username. That way, fans can find you without searching through a sea of John Does!

  2. Set the mood for your brand first

Create a Pinterest board, pull your 5 favorite musicians with great social presences, and take new press photos - ensure you are setting yourself up for success by truly knowing the artist you want the world to see.

  3. Don’t be afraid to follow strangers

Follow other musicians and industry professionals, as well as people who engage with your content! It is super important at the beginning of building your identity that you are connecting with others.

  4. Engagement is your BFF

Followers don’t mean anything if no one is engaging with your content. Ensure you’re responding to comments and DMs in a thoughtful way (meaning not just emojis or a “thanks!”). Plan a few engagement campaigns such as merch giveaway, secret groupchats, or a fan-driven street team.

  5. Curate content based on what you want to share, not what’s trending

There’s nothing wrong with a bit of trendiness here and there, but keep your art and your audience at the forefront of every post and every video you make. It’ll take more time and thoughtfulness, but the fans you’ll earn from this strategy will stick with you for the long haul.

  6. Utilize all of the features - stories, IG Reels, YouTube Shorts

When Snapchat came out with stories, every single platform wanted to jump on the bandwagon, and for a good reason. They can be so useful in building and maintaining your brand - engaging with your audience, sharing new content, and promoting new music!

When Tik Tok came out in 2018, it began to dominate the industry with short-form videos. Repurposing TikToks for Reels or Shorts will guarantee the largest amount of reach, but be sure to tweak content as needed to fit the appropriate platform.
