Kate Cosentino’s New Single Explores What It Means To Be The “Prettiest Girl In The Room”

“Prettiest Girl In The Room” is an indie-pop self-love anthem detailing the complex road to body-positivity and female empowerment with the smooth groove of Cosentino’s crisp electric guitar.

NASHVILLE, TN (January 19, 2022) - Indie-pop artist Kate Cosentino makes a splash as she dives into 2022 with her first release of the year, “Prettiest Girl In The Room,” out now. The emerging artist is beyond thrilled to premiere the single on Loud Women. Released alongside an absolutely mesmerizing, charismatic music video, “Prettiest Girl In The Room” is following her fall 2021 release, “The Match,” and is just a taste of what Cosentino has in store for listeners this year. Cosentino created this track as an ode to those struggling with self-image; while the rawness of the songwriter’s lyrics speak to many, they shine especially bright in the eyes of those struggling to embrace their innate beauty or to those feeling like they are only seen for their physical appearance. This track is the epitome of Kate Cosentino: musically and lyrically clever, brought to life from a deeply personal message, and decorated with colorful fingerstyle guitar. Listeners can expect to hear notes from influences like Lianne La Havas, Maggie Rogers, and Orla Gartland.

The music video for “Prettiest Girl In The Room” takes viewers on a journey from insecurity and self-doubt to the celebration of beginning to embrace one's self. Viewers watch Cosentino navigate through the negative inner voices in her head that so many of us struggle with daily. She sings in the first verse, “heads turned towards girls with more time to spend at the gym / I was born short, so call me a poor sport / But I envy every one of them.” Over the course of the video, viewers watch Cosentino gradually peel herself away from the wallpaper at a party and step into the crowd with confidence. Cosentino packs this video with personality, glamour, and the unmatched beauty of watching a playfully free-spirited woman become reconnected with a part of herself that she had been missing for years. For Cosentino, this song goes out to those who “have a hard time seeing yourself as pretty or you wish people could see beyond your exterior - let this song help you empathize, feel seen, and see the different sides of people around you.” The music video was shot in collaboration with Working Holiday.

The song was a way for me to process my own problems with body image and judgement of others. I wanted to write something that garnered empathy for anyone who never feels like the prettiest girl in the room, as well as anyone who feels no one sees them beyond their exterior.” - Kate Cosentino

“Prettiest Girl In The Room” brings attention to themes like body image and steering away from the jealousy that can sometimes manifest between women. Cosentino found herself working to “reprogram” her mind while writing this song; from rejecting the temptation of the negative thought loop of humorous self-deprecation to unlearning feelings of jealousy towards other women. Listeners are brought on a vivid story through self-doubt, struggling to let go of those feelings, and then re-examining the situation through fresh eyes. By the third chorus, Cosentino sits next to the “Prettiest Girl In The Room” and comes together with her in the realization that every type of person deals with their own problems. This track came to fruition in collaboration with producer Tony Chetta, who has a magical way of making a song come to life in a way that's both polished and tastefully unique.

Listeners can find “Prettiest Girl In The Room” on all major streaming platforms on now.

More about Kate:

Kate Cosentino is a woman of subtle nuances and a plethora of dad jokes. She encompasses wit and sass while balancing the profound ability to speak on behalf of the struggles of others for the mere proposition of opening up conversation. Born and raised in Kansas City, Cosentino has always had an affinity for strong storytellers and jazzy hooks since the beginning. Influenced by powerhouse women like Regina Spektor, Norah Jones, Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent, and many more, Cosentino has found that the best voices are authentic ones. Through songs like “Dirt On It” which deals with the struggles of a trans-child, “Starving For Love,” an unassuming ode to the damaging effects of eating disorders, and “Just Remember” which details a loved one’s journey with Alzheimer’s, Cosentino’s art is undoubtedly cultivated by a deep desire to share stories and share them well. Refusing to shy away from tough subject matter, Cosentino also refuses to abide by all-too-elusive genre pigeon-holing. In this way, her sound is something of genre-bending soulful bliss. With one foot in the pop shallow end and the other in the jazz deep end, Cosentino is only worried about one musical detail: shredding.

Currently residing in Nashville, Tennessee, and working on her post-grad EP which features songs from her adolescent dabbles in love and relationships at Belmont University, Cosentino is hard at work to finally release a cohesive body of work under her name. Nevertheless, Cosentino isn’t just a woman of musical talents but entrepreneurial ones as well. Aside from releasing a fully-funded EP without the help of a label or management company, Cosentino writes for Songlorious and Songbird City where she is able to create personalized on-demand songs for a variety of occasions and content creators. Her artistic talents have been recognized by initiatives like the Nashville Ballet and Bluebird Cafe’s Emergence Series as well as the Johnny Mercer Foundation’s Songwriters Project. Her accolades and personal goals run long, as the founder and creator of her own guitar strap company, Big Chick Energy, and even the humble recipient of the Taco Bell Scholar award. Kate’s biggest claim to fame is writing an original song for American Girl Doll’s doll Tenney Grant which is featured in the official books, products, and video game. In her free time, Cosentino enjoys roller skating, endless TikTok scrolling, and dreaming of being the first female band leader for any broadcast talk show.
