Amelie Jat’s ‘for the plot’ Rises, Climaxes and Resolves with Pop-Punk Perfection

for the plot effortlessly captures the recklessness, nostalgia, dramatic intensity, and freedom that emerge as natural facets of the coming-of-age journey. By delving into themes such as the tumultuous ride of falling in and out of love, mental health, and the messiness that can accompany the pursuit of one’s authentic self, this electrifying pop-punk album encourages listeners to unabashedly embrace the vibrancy of their youth. Emerging as Jat's most intimate body of work, the album extends an invitation to live for the love, for the chaos, and for the plot.

LONDON, UK (October 20, 2023) – The long-awaited moment arrives as Amelie Jat unveils her new album, for the plot, available on all major streaming platforms now. Over the past two years, this cinematic body of work has functioned as the soundtrack to Jat's life as she infused every notable moment into its reminiscent melodies and rhythms. Each piece within the album has intertwined with the various chapters of Jat's journey, creating a musical narrative that resonates deeply with her experiences and emotions. Whether it's the heavy-hitting drums that mirror moments of frustration on “I’M OUT!” or the gentle harmonies that accompany introspective times on “nostalgia,” these compositions have seamlessly integrated into the fabric of Jat's existence, becoming an inseparable part of her personal story. She aspires for this album to now become the musical backdrop to her fans' lives, much like it did for her own.

Renowned producer James McMillan, a five-time Grammy nominee, played a pivotal role in bringing this project to life. The partnership between Jat and McMillan dates back to their first meeting when Jat was just 14 years old, marking a collaboration that spans over six years. Through Jat's teenage ups and downs, McMillan has provided unwavering support and witnessed Jat's evolution as a musician. This project marks the culmination of their third studio album together, highlighting the strength and longevity of their exceptional creative alliance. Jat expresses immense gratitude for this enduring partnership that has significantly contributed to the album's brilliance. Fans can anticipate sounds akin to the styles of Maggie Lindemann, LØLØ, and Nessa Barrett on for the plot.

Track 1: “I’M OUT!”

“I’M OUT!” marked Jat’s initial foray into the pop-punk genre, fueled by a quest for creative exploration. The resultant track underwent further evolution and gains additional sentimental significance as Jat opted to re-record the vocals during the album's final studio session. This process encapsulates Jat’s growth since the project's inception, rendering for the plot’s first track a source of both pride and introspection.

Track 2: “Electric Butterflies”

"Electric Butterflies" emerges as a standout favorite for Jat, embodying the classic friends-to-lovers narrative. Jat distinctly drew inspiration from the sensation of butterflies in one’s stomach – that electrifying sensation and breathlessness at the mere presence of an individual.

Track 3: “nostalgia”

“nostalgia" finds Jat at her most vulnerable, longing for the joy of days gone by. This indie-pop track, featuring a surreal combination of dreamy piano, striking violin, and a cathartic bridge, summons memories for those well-acquainted with the desire to revisit a happier time and who grapple with the enduring impact of a past, all-encompassing love. This track serves as Jat’s favorite lyrical piece as the lyrics link to other various tracks on the album such as “R.I.P.” and “Therapy.”

Track 4: “YOU RUINED MY BIRTHDAY”

“YOU RUINED MY BIRTHDAY” is a contagious, angst-filled track that speaks loudest to anyone who’s ever cried on their birthday. With an infectiously danceable pop-rock/pop-punk melody, cascading drums, all-encompassing electric guitar, and a stunning funk-kissed bridge, Jat perfectly channels her frustrations after realizing that the more pressure we put on things, the more that can go horribly wrong. The lyric “18 turned Emo Barbie” holds an intriguing glimpse into Jat’s various creative endeavors throughout her career. In the Hong Kong version of Barbie Princess Adventure (2021), Jat lent her vocal talents as the Cantonese singing voice for the character Princess Amelia and recorded the tracks for the movie the evening before turning 18.

Track 5: “i’m so in love (i think i’m gonna be sick)”

"i'm so in love (i think i'm gonna be sick)" offers a candid exploration of Jat’s experience with infatuation. The track delves into the sometimes chaotic nature of love, highlighting how it can lead to behaviors that might seem embarrassing in retrospect. Similar to "Electric Butterflies," this track delves into the intense emotions and reactions that love can evoke.

Track 6: “Faking Parties”

"Faking Parties" exudes charm, electricity, and a profound sense of angst. This vibrant pop-punk anthem masterfully encapsulates the wide spectrum of emotions that come with harboring a new crush – from the initial uncertainty and fluttering butterflies to the flustered moments and the myriad of excuses concocted to avoid progressing to the next stage. The track reflects an endearing experience for Jat in which she actually faked being at a party to someone she was crushing on, and had her friends work with her to set the scene and sell the white lie.

Track 7: “let them eat cake”

"let them eat cake" confronts doubters who questioned Jat's potential as a musician. The track defiantly rejects negative perceptions, channeling Jat’s determination to pursue her dreams despite criticism or attempts to undermine her aspirations.

Track 8: “2028”

“2028” evokes a powerful sense of nostalgia with dreamlike synth, an airy piano melody, and pulsating beats. This chill-pop track finds Jat accepting the wistfulness that stems from meeting the right person at the wrong time and embracing the notion that destiny will take its course

Track 9: “Therapy”

"Therapy" navigates a turbulent romantic entanglement characterized by intense affection bordering on addiction. Jat portrays the struggle between obsession and rationality, showcasing the unpredictable yet exhilarating nature of the relationship. This emotional rollercoaster adds an engaging layer to the overall narrative of the album.

Track 10: “Better”

"Better" captures the battle between reason and emotion, illuminating Jat’s realization of deserving better treatment. The track delicately navigates the poignant conflict of needing to let go despite the powerful emotional pull.

Track 11: “my band hates u!”

Jat laughs, cries, and turns full girl-boss on “my band hates u!” She revels in angst on this sassy pop-rock/pop-punk breakup anthem while her band supports her through an unfortunately dramatic breakup.

Track 12: “screaming crying throwing up”

"screaming crying throwing up" candidly delves into Jat’s struggle with mental health, particularly anxiety, OCD, and occasional bouts of depression. The track sheds light on Jat’s tendency to withdraw during such periods, offering insight into her experiences and serving as an explanation and apology to her friends, family, and the wider audience.

Track 13: “R.I.P.”

"R.I.P." assumes its place perfectly as the thirteenth track. Penned in August of the previous year (2022), it is linked with the song "nostalgia," particularly the line "so I’ll go and kill you in my head, telling all my friends you’re dead." This line was born from a genuine attempt to move on from an individual. By October, Jat had grown weary of this person, leading to a creative moment where she crafted a drawing of a tombstone with the individual's name and the phrase "in not so loving memory." This drawing served as a visual reminder that the person was no longer part of her life. The genesis of the final track’s chorus can be traced back to a humorous interaction with a friend who responded to the drawing with the phrase "may he rest in pieces." This quip sparked the idea for the chorus, infusing it with phrases like "haunt you," "knife," "bury you alive," and "dead to me." The concept took shape quickly, aligning with Jat’s vision for a punchy, punk-inspired composition. The outcome, "R.I.P.," was an immediate favorite, marrying humor and a gritty musical style.

More about Amelie:

Amelie Jat transforms her most honest emotions and experiences to create her own original sound of genre-blurring, diary-like pop tracks. Born and raised in Hong Kong, she discovered her love of the drum kit at the age of 3 and swiftly shifted her passions onto playing orchestral percussion, such as the four-mallet vibraphone.

Starting with a sound of bedroom pop production, she has now crossed over into the pop punk universe with influences like Maggie Lindemann, Avril Lavigne, and LØLØ. A multi-instrumentalist who began songwriting on her childhood bedroom floor at the age of 11, she is now a verified artist and hopes that her music will reach people and connect with them.

Stepping out of her comfort zone and taking on a new direction, Amelie has released 3 new pop-punk singles in 2022, all co-written & co-produced with Grammy-nominated producer James McMillan. Since the release of “I’M OUT”, “Therapy” & “Electric Butterflies” (which has surpassed 129k YouTube views), she has gained 85k TikTok followers, with her most viewed post being close to two thirds of a million views, and the newest 2 singles are currently on over 350 Spotify playlists worldwide. Her new mixtape “CINEMATIC!” is an extension of her most chaotic, shaping, and memorable moments as she moves through life and comes into her own, and is every main character’s soundtrack.
